This Letter from the Editor will eventually be a weekly column called Dispatch from Mars. For this week, I share a little about how FilAm Jam came to be and an invitation to a live event.

First of all, thank you so much for checking out this humble little publication, FilAm Jam. The idea for this digital zine has been on my mind for a while now in one shape or another. Right now it’s on Substack but in the future, I hope it takes some kind of physical tangible shape. I’m thinking along the lines of an actual old-school DIY zine.
The About Page says this: “Our aim is to share stories that help amplify, inspire, and empower our Filipino-American community. We want to bring together generations through art, music, food, film, and literature while recognizing our shared Philippine roots. Through The FilAm Jam newsletter, we hope to share our unique personal experiences and reflections as Filipinos in America and Filipino-Americans in the diaspora.”
But the truth is, I just want to collaborate with fellow creatives. And I’d just like to publish creative works that touch on being Filipino in America and feature FilAm artists and their work. I am open to YOUR ideas, YOUR work that may not be featured in more traditional or mainstream outlets.
Some of you who follow our Instagram page will notice that it used to be the page for Pasalubox, a Filipino-inspired subscription box, another project of mine born of the pandemic, but which ultimately I could no longer sustain or maybe since I’m being honest, just something I wasn’t really into.

I want to end by inviting you to an event that I am co-presenting with Kai of Kubo California. It’s the first in what we plan to be a series of Tiny Desk-like musical jams and sketch parties, called “In the Hut.” It’s tonight, May 31 at Kubo in Long Beach. Space is limited but if you are in the area and want to jam, draw or just meet new people, then please reach out to me so I can add you to the guest list.
